On this episode of The Filmcraziest Show, my guest was Mindy Bledsoe, the director, co-writer, co-lead and co-editor on the new road trip drama The In-Between. The film follows Mads (played by Jennifer Stone, of Wizards of Waverly Place fame) and Junior (Bledsoe), two women in Los Angeles united by their chronic illnesses, Mads with Type 1 Diabetes and Junior with CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome).
Together, they set out on a road trip from L.A. to Portland as a way to pay tribute to Junior’s sister, Vanessa, visiting quirky landmarks and cheap motels along the way. The film is billed as a drama but could easily be a comedy, as there are also laugh-out-loud moments throughout the film, with two memorable lead performances here, as well.
In my conversation with Mindy, we talk about how it was originally planned as a horror movie then became what it is today; actually going on a two-week road trip of 4,500 miles to make the movie and “location scouting” via Google Maps; how Jennifer Stone came on board and how she and Mindy became friends; the writing process; Mindy’s vision and the music in the film; as well as depicting Type 1 Diabetes and CRPS in the film (both chronic illnesses that Stone and Bledsoe have in real life) and the reaction from some people seeing that represented on screen. There’s much more in between in this conversation about The In-Between.
You can listen to the podcast directly below, go here to download it or check out the conversation on YouTube, as well. The film is also now available on TVOD/digital platforms such as iTunes, Amazon and Vudu, and is also available on Blu-Ray and DVD in the U.S. and Canada. The soundtrack for the film is also available here.
