On this episode of The Filmcraziest Show, I’m joined by co-writer and director Francesco Giannini of the Canadian pandemic horror Hall, which just had its Canadian Premiere as a part of the Blood in the Snow Film Festival at the end of October, where Giannini recently won the Best Director award, as well.
The film depicts the very beginning of a virus spread, contained to the third floor of a Montreal hotel, as the sickness spreads across a long hotel hallway, where a few scattered victims fight for survival and try to escape from the hallway. The film stars Carolina Bartczak, Yumiko Shaku, Mark Gibson, Bailey Thain and Julian Richings. The film’s directed by Giannini, and is written by Giannini, Derrick Adams and Adam Kolodny.
On the episode we discuss some strange parallels between the film’s fictitious virus and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as how surreal it is releasing a film about a pandemic during a pandemic; the film’s aspect of abuse; the creative choice to tell a story about a virus contained to one floor; what it’s like having Julian Richings here in a bit role; as well as inspirations, from The Shining to TV’s The Walking Dead. There’s much more, too.
A note about spoilers: There are some spoilers at 5:25 to 6:20; then more at 20:00 to 23:25 where we discuss a directing choice that spoils a twist; as well as spoilers at 42:30-43:20 when we discuss an aspect of Julian Richings’ character.
